VINCENT VAN GELDER TO PERFORM

An acclaimed Steinway artist will return to Cherry Hill on Sunday, April 30th at 3:00 PM. Vincent van Gelder delighted his Inez audience in 2016 with his virtuosity, and this year’s performance promises to equal the first.

Vincent van Gelder was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He studied at several academies and universities in Holland, Latvia, and the United States, receiving two masters and subsequently a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri.  His most influential teachers were Leslie Howard, Czerny-Stefanska, Teofils Bikis, Arnis Zandmanis, Wilfred Delphin, and Richard Cass.

Dr. van Gelder has won top prizes in many national and international piano competitions, including the Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition, Artist International Competition, and the St. Louis Artist Presentation competition. He has performed in several countries in Europe and in many states in the US, including a well-reviewed solo recital at Carnegie Hall. He has been a soloist with several orchestras. As a chamber pianist he performed with musicians like Dmitri Sitkovetski, members of the Ciompi Quartet, and his wife, Inara Zandmane. Van Gelder recently started a collaboration with composer Alejandro Rutty, who wrote a piano concerto for him that van Gelder premiered with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. van Gelder has received numerous awards, most recently for video recordings of several programs and two CDs.His recordings have been played on radio and TV stations in the US as well as in The Netherlands. He has been a member of the piano faculty at Duke University and has just performed a well-reviewed recital in London, England.

Dr. van Gelder founded the Triad Institute for Young Musicians in September 2015, an organization that promotes professional support in the form of competitions, master classes, concerts and more for pre-college musicians.

This Sunday’s performance will include Beethoven’s “Rage Over the Lost Penny”, Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz”, and works by Chopin, Ravel, and Liszt.

Dr, Gelder is a Steinway & Sons top educator. Upcoming concerts will be in The Netherlands, US, and Iceland.

Cherry Hill, an 1850s plantation in Inez in southern Warren County, has been the venue for classical music performances since 1982. “WINTERREISE” TO BE SUNG AT CHERRY HILL

The announced performance of Schubert’s “Winterreise” has been changed due to the illness of the singer. Instead, we are fortunate to have Dr. Thomas Otten, chair of the piano division of the music department at UNC-Chapel Hill, as our guest artist.  Dr. Otten, who has played at Cherry Hill several times, will perform music by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Adams, and Ginastera on Sunday, February 5 at 3:00 PM.

 

Pianist Thomas Otten, a California native born of German-American parents, has been hailed by the New York Times as “an extremely original player who puts a formidable technique at the service of his ideas”. He made his performance debut at age 17 with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center and has played in concert in Australia, Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. His performances have been broadcast on both coasts of the US. Dr. Otten is the recipient of numerous national and international awards.  He currently chairs the piano division at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he joined the faculty in 2002.

The performance will be followed by a reception in the 1858 plantation house built for the George Alston family and now the home of the Cherry Hill Historical Foundation. Guests will be able to meet the artists and also tour the historic home, located in Inez in southern Warren County. CHERRY HILL CHRISTMAS CONCERT

The Oakwood Waits, an a cappella group from Raleigh, will perform at Cherry Hill Plantation in Inez on December 18th. The event will begin at 3:00 pm and will feature the group, dressed in antebellum costume, for the 9th year. The performance of traditional carols and songs has been given from the Executive Mansion to the White House and has become a holiday tradition at the 1858 home of the Alston family. The board of directors of the Cherry Hill Foundation presents the singers as a Christmas gift to the community and cordially invites everyone for an afternoon of entertainment and refreshment.

North Carolina Symphony principal cellist Bonnie Thron, clarinetist Fred Jacobowitz, and pianist Anatoly Larkin will perform at Cherry Hill on Sunday, November 20th. The trio will play music of Massenet, Brahms, Shostakovich, and two 20th century composers, McKinley and Rota. Ms. Thron has played previous concerts at Cherry Hill with several trios, as has Mr. Jacobowitz. Dr. Larkin is making his first appearance at the Warren County venue

Bonnie Thron joined the North Carolina Symphoney as principal cellist in 2005. She a member of the piano quartet Quercus and frequently plays with the Mallarme Chamber Players. She appears frequently on the Washington Musica Viva series and previously was a member of the Peabody Trio. She has performed concertos with a number of outstanding orchestras and has played through the world.

Fred Jacobowitz received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Julliard School. He was principal clarinetist in the Annapolis Maryland Symphony Orchestra from 1989-2002. He is equally at home in the worlds of classical, jazz, and folk genres and has performed as recitalist and soloist through the US, Canada, and in Panama. He often plays with the North Carolina Symphony with his wife, Bonnie Thron. He performs as half of the Jacobowitz-Larkin duo with Sunday’s pianist.

Anatoly Larkin, born in Russia, began his studies at the age of 4. He studied in the UK before attending the University of Minnesota where he completed his doctoral studies under Alexander Braginsky. After several years in Minnesota, where he         performed both contemporary and avant-garde music, Dr. Larkin moved to Raleigh where he joined Zenph, a music technology company. He continues to perform, teach and occasionally compose music, both in his studio and at North Carolina State University.

Sunday’s concert will begin at 3:00 PM, and admissions may be paid at the door. Admission charges are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and those 12 and under will be admitted at no charge. A reception will follow the concert.

Cherry Hill is the 1858 antebellum home of the George Alston descendants, located in Inez in southern Warren County. The concert series began in 1982 and is now under the auspices of the Cherry Hill Historical Foundation, Inc.

RACHMANINOFF, GERSHWIN, LIZST TO BE FEATURED AT CHERRY HILL

The Cherry Hill Concert Series welcomes pianist Raffi Besalyan on Sunday, October 16th at 3:00 PM. A native of Armenia, Besalyan began his music studies at the Tchaikovsky Special Music School for Gifted Children. He received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Yerevan Komitas State Conversatory. In addition, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music with legendary American pianist Byron Janis and with Sara Davis Buechner.

Press reviews in Japan, the United States, and Europe have hailed Besalyan as “a true heir of the mainstream of Russian pianism, like Horowitz”, “A keyboard phenomenon”, “a formidable pianist with a commanding presence and rich interpretive gifts”, “a master of his art”. He has established an international reputation as a magnetic and passionate performer.

During this inaugural presentation at Cherry Hill, Dr. Besalyan will perform four Rachmaninoff preludes, Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1, three virtuoso etudes on Gershwin songs arranged by E. Wild, and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (solo piano version arranged by the composer). In addition, he will play two preludes by composers from his native Armenia. Tickets may be purchased at the door, with an adult charge of $10, students at $5, and children 12 and other at no charge. Immediately following the program, a reception will take place in the dining room of the historic 1850’s plantation house, located at 2740 NC Hwy 58, 12 miles south of Warrenton in the community of Inez.
The entire house will be open for touring after the performance.

CHERRY HILL TO PRESENT THE POINSETT TRIO

The Cherry Hill Concert Series opens its fall season with a performance by the Poinsett Piano Trio on Sunday, September 18th at 3:00 PM. The group will play in the Cherry Hill plantation house in Inez and afterwards will visit with patrons at a reception in the dining room of the historic property.

After having performed together with great success for several years in other chamber combinations, David Gross, Deirdre Hutton, and Christopher Hutton founded the Poinsett Piano Trio in 2008. All three members of the trio live in Greenville, South Carolina and teach at Furman University, a Liberal Arts college with a strong performance-oriented music program. Together they have performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with orchestras in Idaho and South Carolina, and recitals in Alabama, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, DC. The trio did international tours to New Zealand in 2010 and 2013, and to Germany in 2012. They have performed at the Piccolo Spoleto festival and have been a “pick of the week” of the Charleston City Paper.

The ensemble is named in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett, a statesman, physician, and botanist from South Carolina. Like the members of the trio, Poinsett had an international life and career, living in England as a child, training in medical school in Scotland, traveling extensively in Europe and South America, and later was elected to Congress before serving as Minister (ambassador) to Mexico. Poinsett is most remembered today as the discoverer of the Mexican Poinsettia plant, whose bright red flowers are popularly included in festive Christmas decorations throughout the world.

The trio will perform Beethoven’s Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 70 No. 2, Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, op. 66, and American composer Amy Beach’s Trio, Op. 150. Visit the trio on the web at http://www.poinsettpianotrio.com where audio samples of their work can be heard.

CHERRY HILL TO PRESENT THE THREE TRIANGLE TENORS

The first Edwina Rooker Commemorative Concert will be held at Cherry Hill Plantation on Sunday, July 31st at 3:00 PM. The Three Triangle Tenors will present “Summer Rhapsody” as a tribute to the longtime supporter of the Cherry Hill Historic Foundation and former Warrenton resident, Edwina Rooker. Ms. Rooker, a fan of the Cherry Hill Concert Series, was also a devotee of jazz, beach music, Broadway and Hollywood themes, and popular music of her youth. As a tribute to Ms. Rooker, the performers will sing Broadway show tunes, folk songs, and well-known opera arias. In addition, a special arrangement by pianist Catherine Hamner of “Deep Purple” will be presented. Ms. Rooker loved to play that particular piece, and it will be played and/or sung as the signature piece at each of the annual Rooker Concerts.

All four performers are from the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area (the “Triangle”) and have individually performed nationally and internationally.

Cherry Hill is an 1850s house and plantation in the Warren County community of Inez on NC Highway 58 south of Warrenton. OUTSTANDING STUDENTS TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

The Cherry Hill Foundation will present its annual student concert in Inez on Sunday, June 12th at 3:00 PM. East Carolina Professor of Piano Dr. Keiko Sekino will introduce five of her most gifted students to the Cherry Hill audience. The students, who are in either the undergraduate or graduate programs at East Carolina, have displayed unusual talent and even at their young ages have experience in teaching and performing while pursuing degrees at the Greenville university.

Student Artist Brandon BanksBrandon Banks began musical studies at age 14 in his hometown of New Bern. This spring he graduated from East Carolina with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. He was named the Outstanding Senior Student in the Keyboard Department. After graduate school, Brandon hopes to pursue a career in New York City as an accompanist.

Sydney LukertSydney Lukert began studying piano at the age of nine. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and has attended Brevard Music Center and the Eastern Music Festival. At ECU Sydney is majoring in piano performance and is an active performer of both solo and chamber music.

Irem OzayIrem Ozay, a native of Turkey, has lived in the US since the age of seven. She began studying piano at the age of 8 and studied at the Raleigh Conservatory of Music until 2009. Irem has been teaching piano since the age of 14 and had 40 students in her studio last year. She has been awarded a full graduate assistantship to East Carolina starting in the fall of 2016, where she will work toward her Master of Music degree.

Anna Beth RuckerAnna Beth Rucker began studying piano at the age of 5. She received a Bachelor of Music degree at East Carolina, graduating Summa Cum Laude in the spring of 2015. She was named the Outstanding Senior Student of the ECU Keyboard Department that year. She has taught piano since she was 15 and plans to continue graduate studies in Piano Pedagogy.

Matthew YoungMatthew Young grew up in Rocky Mount where he began playing saxophone in the 6th grade and then began piano studies at age 13. A graduate of Rocky Mount Academy, Matthew served as pianist for Stonewall Manor, accompanied groups at competitions and performances and currently plays for services in local churches. He has just completed his freshman year at East Carolina where he is pursuing a degree in Piano Performance. He is the grandson of Herbert Charles Davis, formerly of Warrenton.

The program will include solo works by Brahms, Greig, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Liszt, and Prokofiev, and Brahms Waltzes Op. 39 for four hands.

There will be no admission charged for this event, although donations will be gratefully accepted. Following the performance, refreshments will be served in the dining room of the 1850’s plantation home of the George Washington Alston family.

SPRING 2016 – A CELEBRATION OF THE PIANO

Cherry Hill’s spring concert series, A Celebration of the Piano, reaches a crescendo on May 22nd with the performances of Andrew Willis and six of his most gifted graduate students from UNC-Greensboro. Dr. Willis, Professor of Music at UNCG, is well-known for his work with various keyboard instruments and his commitment to the study, performance and teaching of the widest possible range of repertoire. In past performances at Cherry Hill and on the Greensboro campus, Dr. Willis and other professors of music have presented the biannual Focus on Piano featuring immersion into the life and compositions of one composer. This year he and his students will delight their audience with a performance of works by a number of musical geniuses as they play compositions of Brahms, Debussey, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Faure, von Weber, and Moscheles.

In addition to performing individually on the magnificent Steinway concert grand, some of the pianists will perform on two pianos. Dr. Willis relishes the opportunity to work with these incredibly talented students from all over the United States. They include Walton Lott and Colin McDearman from Mississippi; Karl Metzger from Ohio; Stephanie Schmidt from Wisconsin; Robin Morace from New York; and Daniel Seyfried from Idaho. The concert will begin at 3:00 PM, and admission is taken at the door. The price of the performance is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free admission for children 12 and under. A reception in the dining room of the 1850’s plantation home of the Alston family will follow the performance.

SPRING 2016 – A CELEBRATION OF THE PIANO

Concerts at Cherry Hill for the spring series will comprise “A Celebration of the Piano”. Featuring the venue’s renowned Steinway Concert Grand, pianists will perform a variety of keyboard works during the 2016 spring months. The initial performance in the series will take place on February 21st. Dr. Vincent van Gelder will make his first appearance at Cherry Hill. The recipient of numerous awards and rave reviews, van Gelder’s performance will feature Beethoven’s “Appassionata” Sonato. Also included will be van Gelder’s arrangement of a fantasy on the Dance of the Miller by De Falla, two numbers from “Romeo and Juliet” by Prokofiev, Dumka by Tchaikovsky, and three compositions by Franz Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 3; Etude d’execution transcendant No 11; and the Paganini Etude No. 6

The performance in April will feature a return to Cherry Hill by Mayron Tsong, always an audience favorite. In May, Dr. Andrew Willis will appear along with some of his most promising graduate students. The spring celebration will conclude in June with recitals by outstanding piano students in the Department of Music at East Carolina.
