PIANIST TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

Pianist Clara Yang will present music by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussey, Brahms, and current composer Stephen Anderson at Cherry Hill on Sunday, June 25th. The program, which will begin at 3:00 PM will include favorite works by the renowned composers, as well as a work written specifically for Clara Yang by Anderson.

            Dr. Yang, a graduate of the University of Southern California, the Yale School of Music, and the Eastman School of Music, is currently Associate Professor of Music and Head of Keyboard Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Chinese-American pianist has been described as “a first-rate pianist who isn’t afraid of challenges”.  She has performed in notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, the Seymour Centre in Sydney, Australia, Sunset Center in Carmel, California, Memorial Hall at UNC, and Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh.

            Following the concert, a reception will be held in the 1858 plantation home of the George Alston family in Inez, Warren County. Admissions will be taken at the door, with adults at $10, students at $5, and children 12 and under admitted at no charge.

STRING QUARTET TO PLAY AT CHERRY HILL

Aurora Musicalis, a string quartet now celebrating its 29th anniversary, will play at Cherry Hill on April 16th at 3:00 PM. The group, composed of 4 members of the North Carolina Symphony,  has made numerous appearances to critical acclaim. Conjuring up images of the other-wordly northern lights by virtue of its name, Aurora Musicalis has been described as “one of the very best” chamber music ensembles in the state of North Carolina.  These musicians are dedicated to all facets of music education and are associated with organizations such as the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute, the Triangle Youth Philharmonic, and the Lamar Stringfield Music camp, and each member maintains active teaching studios with highly accomplished students.

            The members of the quartet are Emily Glover, violin; Erin Zehngut, violin; Amy Mason, viola; and Elizabeth Beilman, cello. They will play the Beethoven Quartet no. 10, op. 74 “Harp” and the Mendelssohn Quartet no. 5, opp. 44 no.3.

            Following the performance, a reception will be held in the dining room of the 1858 plantation home of the George W. Alston family. The entire house will be open for touring.

VOCALIST AND PIANIST TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

Soprano JoyJanJones and pianist Jonathan Levin, both of whom have performed previously at Cherry Hill, will combine their talents in performance at the plantation home venue on Sunday, March 26th at 3:00 PM

 Joy Jan Jones is a versatile performance artist in high demand. She is an independent, multi-genre singer, instrumentalist, writer, curator, model and actress. Based in New York , she has been featured at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. She has been highlighted in TimeOutNY Magazine twice.

She was born and raised in Houston, TX and has a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Sam Houston State University and a Master of Music in Performance from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.

 Praised by the New York Concert Review as “much more than a pianist, but a musician with a fine mind and enormously promising creative energy, Jonathan Levin has established himself as a compelling pianist, composer, concert producer and music entrepreneur. The founder of the Clayton Piano Festival, now in its 12th season, Jonathan has performed at Cherry Hill several times over the years. 

The program will include works by Donizette, Brahms, William Grant Still, Rossini and others. Both artists are equally at home with opera, cantata, jazz or pop. They will perform both jointly and individually.

Pianist to perform at Cherry Hill


Pianist Kwan Yi will present a program of classical music at Cherry Hill on September 18th. An assistant professor of piano at East Carolina University School of Music, Yi has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is a recipient of many honors and prizes, including the National Federation of Music Clubs Award. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute, Julliard School, and the Peabody Institute where he worked with Leon Fleisher and Robert McDonald. His Cherry Hill program will include works by Haydn, Chopin, Dutilleux, and Brahms.


The program will begin at 3:00 PM, and admissions will be taken at the door. Adult admissions will be $10, students $5, and children 12 and under will be admitted at no charge.

PIANIST TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

Pianist Solomon Eichner will appear in concert at Cherry Hill on Sunday, May 29th. The performance will begin at 3:00 PM and be followed by a reception in the 1858 plantation house in Inez. Admissions will be taken at the door, with adults at $10, students at $5, and children 12 and under admitted at no charge.

Eichner, a native of Baltimore, graduated from the Manhattan School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, and the University of South Carolina. He debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2016 and has performed across the United States and Europe. In 2021 he debuted with the North Carolina Symphony, performing Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals. He returned to the NC Symphony in January of this year when he played the Beethoven Triple Concerto. 

At Cherry Hill, Mr. Eichner will play works by Chopin, Debussey, Gershwn, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Schuman, and Nokolai Kapustin. He has been described as “A sensitive pianist, Solomon’s playing is poetic, beautiful and moving with deep feeling…” “A young Arthur Rubinstein”. Now a resident of Chapel Hill, Eichner maintains a faculty position for the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute.

PIANO TRIO TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

Hailed for “intensity, imagination, skill, and finesse”, Ensemble Aubade will perform at Cherry Hill on Sunday, February 20th at 3:00 PM. The board of directors of the Cherry Hill Foundation is pleased to welcome Peter Bloom, flute;Francis Grimes, viola; and Steven Sussman, piano as they make their first visit to the antebellum home of the Cherry Hill Concert Series.

            The Ensemble Aubade’s program will include wide-ranging music for the unusual combination of flute, viola and piano. Works will include compositions of Jean-Philippe Rameau, Louise Farrenc, Karl Henning, and Maurice Durufle’. Concluding the performance will be a suite by Robert Russell Bennett, the famous Broadway arranger who pays tribute to Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and other familiar composers with whom he worked.

            Based in Boston, Ensemble Aubade has presented concerts across the United States, captivating audiences with their electrifying performances.

TENOR AND PIANIST TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

The Cherry Hill Board of Directors will present tenor Tyrone Chambers and pianist Jonathan Levin in a program of American music on Sunday, August 29th. The performance will begin at 3:00 PM and admissions will be taken at the door. Adult admission is $10, students at $5, and children 12 and younger admitted at no charge.

            Tyrone Chambers, a New Orleans native, began singing as a youngster with his church choir. He attended Morehouse College where he earned a degree in music and developed a passion for opera. While at Morehouse he received a thorough background in European classical music and later received a Masters in Music from the University of Oklahoma. He returned to New Orleans and performed in many local productions before moving to New York City for greater access to auditions. He has performed in numerous locations throughout Europe and the United States. His musical repertoire is extensive, being equally at home with jazz, musical theater, opera, and oratorio. 

            Jonathan Levin has established himself as a compelling pianist, composer, concert producer, and music entrepreneur. He is the Artistic Director and Founder of the Clayton Piano Festival, now in its 10th season. Performing across the United States and Europe, Mr. Levin has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards and has performed several times at Cherry Hill.

            The two musicians collaborated to create the show “American Portraits” which they performed at Levin’s Clayton Piano Festival.  Much of that program will be performed at Cherry Hill and will include spirituals, show tunes, folk songs, and original works with an overarching theme of peace and unity.

            Due to the continuing presence of Covid 19, safety protocols will be followed. Any unvaccinated persons will be asked to wear masks, and all others will be encouraged to do the same. Seating in the 1858 plantation house will be in numerous locations for safe distancing.

GIFTED STUDENTS TO PERFORM AT CHERRY HILL

The Cherry Hill concert series will resume its annual outstanding student concert on Sunday, June 6th at 3:00 PM.  Dr. Margaret Evans of Meredith College will present several of her most promising students in a program that features Chopin, Khachaturian, Liszt, Haydn, Bach, Von Weber, Handel, Scott Joplin, and other favorite composers. 

Students must be recommended by their teachers and/or professors before being invited to play at the Inez concert venue. This year the three pianists attend area high schools and have all been awarded highest honors in various festivals and competitions for the piano. 

Andrew Wood, 15, is a tenth grader at Enloe Magnet High School in Raleigh. He also plays violin, guitar, and sings in choirs. Yeram Hahn is also a sophomore at Enloe. In addition to piano, she plays the violin in the Enloe orchestra. Trisha Samavedam, 11th grade, has been playing piano for the past ten years. Her repertoire ranges from Bach to Boulanger.  Dr. Evans is also presenting a young soprano, Rae Fredette.  Miss Fredette is a rising sophomore at New England Conservatory where she studies vocal performance. She will be accompanied by Susan Hoskins, a member of the faculty at Meredith College. Ms. Hoskins holds performance degrees from Meredith and UNC Greensboro and currently studies with Dr. Evans.

A reception will follow the performance, and the 1858 historic home will be open for touring. There will be no admission charged for this first concert since Covid restrictions were eased. Any persons who have not been vaccinated are urged to wear masks.

Jonathan Levin to Perform at Cherry Hill

            The Cherry Hill Historical Foundation will hold its first full concert in more than a year on Sunday, May 9th. The Mothers’ Day event will begin at 3:00 PM and will feature pianist Jonathan Levin performing Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 27, No. 2 “Moonlight”; Moldobasonov’s “Mother’s Field” ballet; and Edvard Grieg’s Sonata in E Minor, op. 7.

            Jonathan Levin has established himself as a compelling pianist, composer, concert producer, and music entrepreneur. He is Artistic Director and Founder of the Clayton Piano Festival, now in its 10th season of concerts. He presented a special performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, and has made solo appearances in major venues across the United States, including Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. He has been a laureate of many competitions and prizes including the National Stillman-Kelley Award, 2nd Prize at the 2012 Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, and recipient of the Alan Walker Award from the American Liszt Society.

            Mr. Levin has performed several times at Cherry Hill, and the directors are pleased to feature him as the guest artist for the  Emily Meymandi Concert, established by Dr. Assad Meymandi in honor of his late wife.

            Due to the continuing threat of Covid 19, safety precautions will be in effect for the concert and the reception to follow. Social distancing will be followed and those attending will be asked to wear masks. Several seating areas will be available, including the front and back porches, and outer doors will remain open.
